Skilled Migration Program

The Whyalla Economic Development Board is contracted by Immigration SA through the Department of Trade and Economic Development to assist employers to fill long-term skilled vacancies.

Skilled Migration is the last option in the area of recruiting skilled occupations and only employers that can prove a long term vacancy exists can make use of the program.

WEDB has employed a full time Migration and Workforce Development Officer (MWDO) who works with Whyalla employers to identify the skill vacancies and then assists with sourcing appropriate labour. Information provided is as supplied by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to assist the employer throughout the process. The MWDO is not able to give migration advice as outlined in the 1958 Migration Act.

Options for Employers
Employers can select someone from overseas through sponsoring them on either a temporary or permanent visa.

Temporary visas - You can employ overseas workers for a period of between three (3) and four (4) years and with this visa those people you employ from overseas can:
  • Work in Australia for a period of between three (3) months and four (4) years
  • Bring any eligible secondary applicants with them to Australia - secondary applicants can work and study
  • After entering Australia, have no limit on the number of times they travel in and out of Australia.

For more information visit the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website

Permanent visas - The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) is for employers in regional Australia, to fill skilled positions they are unable to fill from the local labour market. Under the RSMS, employers are able to nominate staff from overseas or temporary residents currently in Australia to fill full-time, permanent vacancies.

The employers applying for a visa can be either of the following:

  • skilled workers from overseas
  • skilled temporary residents.

This visa allows eligible visa holders and any dependent family members included in the visa application to live as permanent residents in Australia.
