REGIONAL PROFILE
Whyalla is often referred to as the "mining services hub of South Australia" - one of South Australia's principal industrial cities, a major exporter and a significant contributor to the States economy.
Whyalla has a rich history built on steel production and resource processing and has attracted an extensive support base in the particular areas of fabrication, construction, electrical and other service provision.
Today the city's economic base is expanding, with exciting new global industries being targeted including aquaculture, sustainable development and renewable energy technologies.
The recent launch of South Australia's largest industrial estate, with Stage 1 (140ha) almost completely sold and planning is underway for Stage 2, along with the proposed desalination plant to support the proposed Olympic Dam expansion (BHP Billiton). Discussions surrounding a new bulk ore port, the establishment of a Solar Thermal Concentrating demonstration plant all point to exciting times ahead for the City.
The region also has enormous potential for additional mining and mineral processing with western and northern exploration activity confirming new mineral resources.
The city's 22,544 (ABS Census 2006) residents enjoy a quality lifestyle, with modern leisure and sporting facilities and large cosmopolitan shopping centres.
The Mediterranean/Californian style climate enables them to make full use of the many outdoor activities.
Whyalla is home to a modern integrated health service with an acute/specialist and community health focus. The impressive public and private education system includes the State's only University campus outside of Adelaide (University of South Australia).
